India after a bad run against England and Australia in Australia lifts their spirits after thumping Australia in first 2 tests of 4 match test series. Australia will have to do something special to get back into this series, India has won both the test matches quite convincingly and they will come hard against the Aussies again in the third test.

Earlier Australia started the day with 2 down for 74 they were certainly hoping to put up a better batting performance. But it didn’t happen as Indian spinners took complete control over the match.

Shane Watson was the first dismissal of the day when he nicked one through to Dhoni, Ishant Sharma in the process also got his first wicket in the series which is dominated by spinners.

Michael Clarke who has carried Australian batting on his shoulders uptill now in the series was the next one to go when he was bowled by Jadeja for the second time in this match.

From their on a collapse was triggered and India rattled the last six of Australian batters for just 23. Jadeja after claiming Clarke’s wicket soon dismissed Cowan who was also the highest scorer for Australia with 44. Jadeja also showed glimpses of his fielding effort when a direct hit from him ended Henriques stay.

Ashwin then joined the party he and Jadeja destroyed Australian tail Ashwin in the process also claimed another 5 for, he is having a dream series. In the end India won by an innings and 135 runs a huge victory, this is also the first time when a team has lost a game by an innings after declaring in first innings.

This victory will lift the spirits of Indians going into the third test whereas Australia will have to do lots of thinking before the next match. Michael Clarke is having a fine series with the bat but he will need much more support from his other mates. The next match starts on 14th march.

India starts the test series with a win over Australia. Ashwin and Dhoni were their main contributers. Ashwin grabbed 12 wickets in the match whereas captain cool played innings of his life as he scored over 200 runs for the first time in his career.

For Australia Michael Clarke and Henriques who was also making his debut performed well. Australia made 380 runs in the first innings with the help of Michael Clarke’s brilliant century. India in reply lost 8 for 406 and after that one of the best partnership started as Dhoni and Kumar calmed their nerves. For India Virat Kohli scored century  whereas Dhoni scored double century.

Australia failed to score in their second innings only Henriques could score some runs and took Australia to 240 Ashwin was again the pick of the bowlers as he bagged 5 wickets.

India only wanted 50 runs to win and they won it easily by 8 wickets. Australia will have to make some improvements before going into the next game. The spinners Ashwin in particular proved a key player for India and Australia will have to play spin well if they want to equal the series.

Lara marvels at Clarke’s rise as a run machine

Sydney: Lara thought Clarke as journalist when he first met him in Guyana who was asking for lift.

Brian Lara first met Michael Clarke nearly 10 years ago outside the modest Cheddi Jagan International Airport, half an hour’s drive south of the Guyana capital, Georgetown. Clarke, however, then an upstart batsman but already the ”next big thing” of Australian cricket, was simply looking for a lift into town, and in seeing the legendary Trinidadian also among the newly arrived, sauntered up to him. Lara had no idea who he was.

”We were in Guyana many, many years ago and I was a day late and I got off at the airport and this guy asked if I could take him into the city,” Lara said on Sunday. ”I asked him if he was a reporter. It was Michael Clarke. I’m not sure who he was replacing on that tour but somebody got injured.”

It was Damien Martyn who had succumbed to a finger injury and Clarke, who had been in the Caribbean as part of the Test squad in 2003, was called in as late cover for the one-day leg of the tour. Having convinced Lara of his identity the now Australian captain got chatting, and almost a decade later the prolific West Indian has been watching closely as Clarke channels him with monster score after monster score on the international scene.

Lara, 43, is the all-time champion of the marathon innings – not that that should imply anything remotely stodgy about their contents. Six years into Test retirement he still holds two of the top three highest individual scores in history, his 400 not out against England at St John’s in 2004 and his 375 against the same opposition at the same ground 10 years earlier split only by Matthew Hayden’s 380 against Zimbabwe in 2003.

Clarke has not quite entered that stratosphere but might well have done considering two of his three mighty innings this year – his 329 against India at the SCG in January, and his 259 against South Africa at the Gabba last week – were unbeaten and halted only by his own declaration. Add in his 210 against India in Adelaide to help clinch Australia’s 4-0 belting of India this year and Lara, as with everyone else, is sitting up and taking notice of a run-scoring streak rarely bettered.

”We became very, very good friends since then and it’s lovely to see the way that he has gone on,” he said at the University of Wollongong’s Stumping Serious Diseases Twenty20 charity event. ”He commanded a place on the Australian team very early and now as captain is leading his team very well. It’s wonderful, I think, also the fact that as captain it also enhanced his game. That is something that is always an issue – if a guy is going to be given that job, how is he going to handle it, is it going to affect his batting? That seems to be out of the way. Obviously his scoring – the double centuries and the triple century – is awesome. Also his focus on winning as well, as the captain, is something that you very much have to very much appreciate it. Putting yourself aside to ensure the team is successful.”

Lara, for the record, can still play, making 48 in Sunday’s charity game, while his former West Indies captain Viv Richards chimed in with 19. The other marquee ex-cricketer in action was Adam Gilchrist, who was asked about the sacking of his successor Brad Haddin and insisted the demoted Test wicketkeeper could be picked for Australia again.

”He’s certainly not done and I think he’s going about his business the best and only way possible. I thought he handled being left out of the national team extremely well,” Gilchrist said. ”I certainly know from close account that he simply said, ‘No problem, I understand it, I’m just going to make you pick me now’. Not in an aggressive, offensive manner: ‘I’m just going to do everything I can to make sure that you pick me’.”

Time for Test rethink:

He was one of Test cricket’s greatest accumulators but Brian Lara believes it is the backwardness of the five-day game, and not the limited-overs formats, that is threatening the popularity of the sport.

The West Indian star said the scheduling of Tests lacked relevance and pandered to broadcasters. He said the International Cricket Council must press with a World Test Championship, now earmarked for 2017 after being slated for 2013 but cancelled.

‘‘That mundane exercise of just Test series after Test series — I believe the time for that is gone,’’ Lara said. ‘‘The Ashes is something of great importance but I believe in a holistic look at Test cricket. I believe if the ICC comes up with something that creates a league, I think the interest is going to come back.’’

While Viv Richards claimed Twenty20 was killing the Test game in the Caribbean, Lara said it had been reinvigorating . ‘‘Watching five days of cricket for anyone was always a hard task,’’ Lara said. ‘‘But [with] Twenty20, the crowds have come back.’’

The tourists reached their target of 192 with three wickets remaining as the sun set on a dramatic final day at Kensington Oval, sealing a comeback victory to take a 1-0 advantage in the three-Test series.

West Australian Hussey was composed with the bat amid a nervy finish from the tourists, scoring 32 off 26 balls and steadying Australia’s innings after the West Indies took a flurry of middle order wickets.

Kemar Roach bowled Hussey with three runs still required for victory, but man of the match Ryan Harris and Ben Hilfenhaus ensured an Australian victory.

Hilfenhaus struck the winning run at 5.42pm local time with a quick single that was tensely referred to the third umpire, who found the Tasmanian had made his ground in time.

Australia had earlier been in a commanding position of 1-106 after dismissing the West Indies for 148 before lunch.

West Indies captain Darren Sammy dropped Shane Watson on four and it proved costly for the home side as Watson and Ed Cowan combined for a 75-run partnership.

Cowan was also given a lifeline when keeper Carlton Baugh failed to hold on to an edge off Sammy’s bowling.

Off-spinner Narsingh Deonarine gave the West Indies renewed hope, first dismissing Watson and then removing Cowan (34), Ricky Ponting (14) and Michael Clarke (6) within the space of nine balls, leaving Australia needing 52 with five wickets in hand.

Test debutant Matthew Wade added 18 to the chase but was caught in the deep by Devendra Bishoo off Roach, before Hussey and Harris added another 12 runs in their seventh-wicket stand.

Earlier, Australia also had a number of dropped catches, with three opportunities going begging during the first session.

Roach and Bishoo combined for a final wicket stand of 28 and gave the West Indies a chance, while Hilfenhaus finished the innings with 4-27.

Harris dismissed Roach on the final day to claim figures of 3-31, adding to his two first innings wickets and decisive 68 not out when Australia looked to be heading into the second innings with a massive deficit.

It was Australia’s fifth consecutive Test victory following the 4-0 whitewash of India in December and January.

The second Test will take place in Port of Spain beginning on Sunday.

Result: Australia won by 3 wickets.

Man Of The Match: Ryan Harris (Australia).

Awards: Allan Border Medal 2012

Melbounre: Australia’s test captain Michael Clarke won his 3rd Allan Border Medal and was also named TEST player of the year. Shane Watson was named ODI & T20I player of the year.

Clarke finished the medal count with 231 votes, a clear winner from the second-placed Michael Hussey on 174 votes while Watson, who had won the past two Allan Border Medals, was third on 166. Clarke first claimed the medal in 2005 and in 2009 he tied for the award with Ricky Ponting, and again this year they could hardly be split in the Test arena.

Clarke took over the captaincy from Ponting after the World Cup last year and the extra responsibility brought out the best in him. He scored a century in each of the four Test series Australia player over the past year and was the team’s leading scorer in three of those series, against South Africa, New Zealand and India.

Watson’s long injury lay-off – he missed almost the whole Australian summer due to hamstring and calf problems – did not hamper his chances in the 50-over format. He polled strongly enough in the World Cup and Australia’s tours of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and South Africa to secure 19 votes, and won the award by virtue of having more three-vote games than Clarke, who also finished on 19.

In the T20 category, Watson pipped Wade in a countback despite playing only half the matches in the voting period. Watson was Australia’s leading run scorer during the voting period and took home the award that was first handed out last year, when David Hussey was the inaugural recipient.
