3rd Test: Wankhede witnessed a thrilling draw

Posted by DonOfTheWorld On November - 26 - 2011 Comments Off

Mumbai: West Indies snatched a thrilling draw with the scores level after India failed to score the three runs they needed for victory in the last over on a riveting final day of the third and final Test on Saturday.

Darren Sammy is happy after saving the Test off the final ball,

Needing two runs to win off the last ball, Ravichandran Ashwin and Varun Aaron scampered a single before Ashwin was run out while going back for an improbable second run, with India finishing on 242-9.

It was only the second time that a Test has been drawn with the scores level. The other instance was when England failed to beat Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in 1996.

Seventeen wickets fell on the Wankhede Stadium pitch, which was a batting paradise on the first four days with both teams posting huge first innings totals.

Spinners Pragyan Ojha and Ashwin forced a batting collapse in the first session as West Indies were bundled out for 134 in their second innings.

Half-centuries from Virender Sehwag (60) and Virat Kohli (63) put India on course for victory and a 3-0 series whitewash as they chased a target of 243 runs from 64 overs.

However, West Indies struck back by picking up crucial wickets during the closing stages to halt India’s progress.

Sehwag stroked a chancy 60 off 65 balls and added 82 runs for the second wicket with Rahul Dravid (33) to launch India’s charge towards the target.

Sehwag, who was dropped three times, hit eight boundaries before he was finally caught by West Indies captain Darren Sammy off leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo while trying a cheeky reverse paddle sweep.

Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar (3) fell soon after in similar fashion, trying to drive on the up against part-time off-spinner Marlon Samuels, and were caught at short mid-wicket.

West Indies had a sniff of victory at that stage with India at 113 for four, but Vangipurappu Laxman (31) and Kohli steadied the ship with a 52-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Kohli notched up his second fifty in the match with three boundaries and a six and took his team close to the target but his dismissal, with India still needing 19 runs to win, put the pressure back on India’s tailenders.

In the morning, the visiting batsmen, put under pressure by the generous turn on offer, played some atrocious shots and helped India’s spinners give life to a match that had looked like ending in a draw for the past two days.

Resuming on their overnight score of 81-2, the tourists succumbed meekly in just 95 minutes in the morning, losing their last eight wickets in 23.2 overs as Ojha (6-47) and Ashwin (4-34) dominated.

Left-arm spinner Ojha added four more wickets to his overnight tally of two and bowled in an uninterrupted spell on the final day, extracting good turn and bounce.

Ashwin, who notched his maiden test century on Friday, took four wickets to add to his five-wicket haul in the first innings.

Kraigg Brathwaite (35) and first-innings centurion Darren Bravo (48) added 61 for the third wicket, the only notable partnership in the innings, but Braithwaite’s dismissal in the fifth over of the morning opened the floodgates as West Indies lost their last eight wickets for 43 runs.

Comments by both captains & by man of the series:

Darren Sammy (Captain of West Indies): ”Congrats to India for winning the series. This match is a great advert for Test cricket, like Australia-South Africa. We were looking for the win, and then tie (sic). Bishoo bowling on one leg. Lion-heart. Marlon bowling 20-something overs on the bounce. Ravi’s bowling. I know we didn’t bat well today, but we fought. We knew it was going to be tough on these wickets, but we stuck it out. We showed we are improving. It’s about putting both innings together, and we will be better competitors. Especially in this match to see this inexperienced line-up post 590 against India in India was good. We lost the last tow matches in an hour. One session each took the game away from us. But we are fighting, and I am sure the fans are happy with the improvement.”

Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Captain of India): ”The final day was superb, and we would have forgotten the first four days, which can be called boring to some extent. The Last time we played at CCI, there was something in the morning, and it fizzled out. We weren’t expecting it to as much as it did today. When batting we lost wickets at the wrong time. Also they played good cricket. It’s a lesson it’s not yours until it’s in your kitty. Also I would love to see wickets turning this much on the first evening so we don’t have to wait five days for the excitement.”

Ravichandran Ashwin (Man Of The Series): The last two overs I thought Ishant played really well. The field was up for him, so I thought it was a better chance of squeezing a boundary through. The last two balls I wanted to defend first and then go after the last ball. Didn’t work out unfortunately. Never thought it would so close. as it got old, the ball bounced and stopped, but it was definitely not unplayable. Ojha bowled really well, and built the pressure.”

1st Test: Sachin and Laxman took India home

Delhi: Sachin Tendulkar made a solid 76 and VVS Laxman a well-measured 58 not out to help India score a five-wicket victory over the West Indies on Wednesday in the first Test, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-game series.

Sachin Tendulkar raises his helmet after reaching 15,000 Test runs

Tendulkar missed out on a potential 100th international century, but his innings put India in a winning position on the fourth day at the Feroze Shah Kotla Stadium.

He added 67 for the third wicket with Rahul Dravid (31) and 71 for the next withLaxman (58 not out) as India were made to work hard for their victory.

Yuvraj Singh (18) was bowled by West Indian captain Darren Sammy with just one run needed for victory, leaving captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the other not out batsman without scoring a run.

Tendulkar, who resumed on 33, closed in on the historic 100 centuries milestone but was trapped lbw by leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo when trying to pull a short-pitched delivery. He hit 10 fours in his 148-ball innings.

A crowd of more than 10,000 had turned up at the ground to watch Tendulkar get another three-figure mark but went back disappointed as the Mumbai batsman failed to do so.

Laxman, who had started with a couple of trademark shots off the leg to pace bowler Fidel Edwards early in his innings, struck six fours off 105 balls.  Earlier, overnight batsman Dravid was out for 31, adding only one run to his overnight score.

Pace bowler Fidel Edwards bowled a beautiful incoming delivery that went between bat and pad, what was called the ball of the match. Dravid batted for a total of 154 minutes, hitting only three fours off 101 balls.

The West Indies, who had won a previous two-Test series in Bangladesh by a 1-0 margin, had a comfortable 95-run first innings lead but failed to drive home the advantage when India bowled the visitors out for only 180 in the second innings.

“That was a big lead, we all felt we did not bat the way we should have in the first innings,” Dhoni said. “It was not an easy wicket to score, you had to be aware of the ball that kept low.”

India’s experienced batting line-up, which had folded for only 209 in the first innings, made few mistakes the second time around and also buried fears of low bounce on a pitch which did not see huge scores.

“When you play against a top team, you want to create the opportunity to win which we did that in the first innings. We did not bat well in the second but believe we can win matches here.”

The next Test will be held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata from November 14 to 18 and the final game in at the Wandheke Stadium in Mumbai from November 22 to 26.

The Test Series will be followed by five One-Day Internationals.

Result: India won by 5 wickets.

Man Of The Match: Ravichandran Ashwin (India).

Bangladesh, who were set an improbable victory target of 508 runs, were shot out for 278 soon after lunch on the fifth day. Bishoo, who turns 26 on Sunday, returned with career-best figures in only his seventh Test. He ended with match figures of 8-152 and now has 32 wickets in seven Test matches since his debut in May.

Skipper Darren Sammy chipped in with 2-19 off13 overs and also held three sharp catches – two at slip and one off his bowling – to rout the hosts. The emphatic win after the drawn first match in Chittagong provided a massive morale-booster for the Windies, who begin a three-Test series in India on Sunday.

The win was the West Indies first Series win since they beat England to win the Wisden Trophy at home in March, 2009. It was the first away series win since Zimbabwe in 2003.

Bangladesh, resuming at the overnight score of 164-3, lost the crucial wickets of opener Tamim Iqbal, skipper Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan in the morning session.

Tamim, Bangladesh’s main batting hope who was unbeaten on 82, added just one more run when he was caught at slip by Sammy off Bishoo in the day’s third over. The left-hander’s 83 contained eight boundaries and a six. Shakib and Rahim raised visions of a Bangladesh fightback when they put on 88 runs for the fifth wicket, before both batsmen fell in the space of four runs.

Shakib made 55 when he tried to steer Sammy to third man, but only managed to sky a catch to Shivnarine Chanderpaul running back from first slip. Rahim took his overnight score of 33 to 69 when he was bowled by a superb delivery from Bishoo that spun in sharply from leg to clip the off-stump.

Bishoo struck twice in the first over after lunch, trapping Nasir Hossain leg-before and having Suhrawadi Shuvo brilliantly caught one-handed by Sammy at second attempt.

Fast bowler Kemar Roach sealed the win by bowling last man Rubel Hossain to spark the West Indies celebrations.

Result: West Indies won by 229 runs.

Man Of The Match: Kirk Edwards (West Indies).

Winner Of The Series: West Indies by 1-0.

Comments by both captains:

Mushfiqur Rahim (Captain of Bangladesh): ”We needed to play the first session without losing wickets, but that didn’t happen. After losing the toss on a batting wicket, our bowlers did a great job, but our batting in the first-innings was a letdown. If you want a Test win, you need to score big, and that’s something our top order could not do. Tough series coming up against Pakistan, hope we can pull up our socks.”

Darren Sammy (Captain of West Indies): ”This feels very good, we knew it was going to be difficult, but the efforts from the guys and the coaching staff – this was just reward. Good to see the way we came together. The coach Gibson focuses on constant improvements, and we showed that in this series. Bravo batted out of his skin, and then Shiv and Kirk took over.. It was a complete team effort.”

3rd ODI: Bangladesh ran through Windies

Chittagong: Bangladesh enjoyed one of the easiest victories in their history on Tuesday, beating the West Indies by eight wickets.

Bangladesh get together after claiming a wicket

Put in to bat by Tigers captain Mushfiqur Rahim, the West Indies could only manage to make 61 all out after 22 overs at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

The home side could then afford a leisurely stroll to 62-2, sealing victory in the third one-day international with a whopping 30 overs remaining.

The crushing victory restores a measure of pride for Bangladesh, who had already lost the three-match series after going down in both of the first two instalments.

Opener Kieran Powell’s return of 25 was the top score for the West Indies, an indication of the tourists’ catastrophic innings.

Carlos Brathwaite made 11 batting at number eight, and together with Powell they were the only exceptions to a comprehensive failure in all departments.

Powell’s partner Danza Hyatt went for three and Marlon Samuels five, while key men Darren Bravo and Kieron Pollard both fell for ducks.

At one point the West Indies lost seven wickets in the space of six overs, with Shakib Al Hasan bagging 4-16 to lead the wicket takers for the hosts.

Nasir Hossain and Shafiul Islam had two apiece, while Nazmul Hossain and Suhrawadi Shuvo took one wicket each, as no Bangladesh bowler went home from the rout empty handed.

After such a meagre innings from the West Indies, the run chase was never more than a formality for the home side.

The loss of Shahriar Nafees for a duck and Imrul Kayes’ departure for 11 proved to be of no consequence, as the unbeaten pair of Tamim Iqbal (36) and skipper Rahim (10) finished the job.

Bangladesh’s victory will come as a welcome boost ahead of the first of two Test matches between the teams, starting in Chittagong on Friday.

Result: Bangladesh won by 8 wickets.

Comments by both captain and by man of the match:

Darren Sammy (Captain of West Indies): ”We took our foot off the gas (he pronounces it ‘gaas’) today. Congratulations to us for winning this series, it is a good feeling, but today shows that you can never take your opponents lightly. It will be a keenly contested Test series. We have seen what Bangladesh can do at home, and we hope to come back and start that series on a high.”

Mushfiqur Rahim (Captain of Bangladesh): ”There was nothing to lose today, and the boys came out and showed character. This is a big lift before the Test series. We wanted to bowl after winning the toss, the pacemen bowled well and were backed up by the spinners. Hopefully we will keep winning in Chittagong.”

Shakib Al Hasan (Man Of The Match): ”I always enjoy bowling here. All our spinners did well, after the new balls got us the breakthrough. We just needed to bat well and stick to our plans after that.”

2nd ODI : Comfortable victory for Windies

Mirpur: Lendl Simmons helped the West Indies ease to an eight-wicket victory in the second one-day international against Bangladesh on Saturday.

Marlon Samuels celebrate with his Man Of The Match award

Opener Simmons made 80 runs at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, with his contribution second only to Marlon Samuels, who notched an unbeaten 88 for the tourists.

The West Indies successfully chased down a Bangladesh total of 220 all out, finishing 221-2 and securing victory in Mirpur with a comfortable 44 balls remaining.

The visitors now hold an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss for the home side and elected to bat, but Bangladesh made a nightmare start.

They lost openers Tamim Iqbal (one) and Imrul Kayes (0), as well as first drop Mohammad Ashraful (0), to be floundering at 1-3, four balls into the second over.

Captain Rahim did his best to undo the damage with a valiant 69 and he received support from Nasir Hossain (50) and Naeem Islam (30).

But the disastrous opening proved too costly for Bangladesh to overcome, with Kemar Roach (3-49), Darren Sammy (2-42) and Ravi Rampaul (2-27) doing the damage with the ball for the West Indies.

Andre Russel and Samuels both had one wicket apiece as Bangladesh fell well short of a par score on home soil.

It proved a straight forward run chase for the visitors, with Simmons again the driving force behind the West Indies’ victory.

The Trinidadian had registered his first century in ODI cricket as the West Indies won the series opener on Thursday.

And his confident knock at the top of the order, assisted by Danza Hyatt’s 39, set up the win again with time to spare on Saturday.

Both openers eventually were accounted for by Shakib Al Hasan, but Samuels wasted no time in finishing Bangladesh off, with 12 boundaries helping him race to 88 runs from just 74 balls.

The West Indies can now seal a 3-0 whitewash with victory in the third and final match in Chittagong on Tuesday.

Result: West Indies won by 8 wickets.

Man Of The Match: Marlon Samuels (West Indies).
